1050 Chum Charts: February 2013

Thirty Years Ago, January 1st, 1980, the weekly 1050 Chum top 30 chart is clogged with pop rock tunes with the one-off new wave tune making it in by mistake. It's just under 2 years from new wave/pop hits pushing out the classic rock from the charts. The city is Toronto. There is no internet. Computers are called Pets. The concept of an import record is rare. Vinyl and Cassette tapes are the medium. Radio dominates what we listen too. For us, illegal downloading is taping songs off the radio onto maxell cassette tapes. I'm nine years old and haven't even discovered what music is. It won't be until about 1981 that a punk rock chick named Joan Jett belts out I Love Rock and Roll on a friends portable cassette player as we play ball hockey on the street. This will be the beginning of me being sucked into pop music culture and discovering the historic 1050 Chum chart. Which then led to trips to Sam the Record Man, A&As, and Music World to track down the latest 7 Inch record or the full length cassette tape. The chart has been around for years but for me this is about the eighties. Follow along as we see the likes of the Thompson Twins, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Culture Club, Naked Eyes, OMD, Men At Work, Howard Jones, Michael Jackson, Men Without Hats, Duran Duran, Wham, Split Enz and Madonna dominate the charts. This is the 80s.

Culture Club knocks Marvin out of the top spot with Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. Duran Duran crashes into the top 10 with Hungry Like The Wolf knocking out Adam Ant's Goody Two Shoes. Stay tuned for next weeks chart when 2 new tracks crash into the 1050 Chum Charts.

NB.. Unfortunately due to poor archiving the Chart is missing two tracks and the numbering is wonky. But note there was only one new entry this week.

1050 Chum Chart Sunday Feb 13, 1983 Thirty Years Later

For some reason 1050 Chum had two charts on the weekend of Feb 12/13. Maybe for Valentines Day? This was the Sunday chart. Marvin Gaye knocked Toto out of the top spot with Sexual Healing. Adam Ant pushed his way into the top 5 at 5 with Goody Two Shoes.

NB. Unfortunately due to poor archiving the Chart is missing 30, 28, and 23. These were not new releases. Eric Clapton was the only new release.

The top of the chart stays pretty static this week as Toto holds onto the number 1 spot for a second week with Africa. Human League push their way into the top 5 at 5 with Mirror Man. What happened to number 27 you ask? We don't know. The archives that the chart is pulled from was missing it. If only I had the Ron Hall hardcopy book.

As fast as Musical Youth stormed the top of the charts they exit just as fast ending up at number 10 this week. This allows Toto to climb to the number 1 spot with their classic track Africa. This week Marvin Gaye, Culture Club, and Billy Joel land into the Top 5. Dexy's rounds it out at the 5th spot as Come On Eilleen begins its descent from the charts.

Toto lands in the second spot with Africa after switching places with Dexys. Men At Work holds on strong with the fourth spot and Marvin Gaye comes crashing into the top 5 with Sexual Healing.
